1974: The sixty-first Tour de France, which took place from 27 June to 21 July, visited England – the first time the sport had been held here – for its circuit stage on the Plympton bypass. The organisers had had to approach the Secretary of State for the Environment for permission to close the road for the purpose. Plans had been made for 100,000 to watch, but rain the previous day was thought to have put some people off. Nevertheless, the sun shone as the roads were closed to traffic at 8.30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. start. Around 20,000 spectators turned out, braving the wind to watch 129 riders racing round the 7½-mile circuit up one carriageway and down the other, at an average speed of 26mph.
